On page 8 of Light From The Yellow Star, Dr. Fisch paints a picture of a bridge over the River Danube. He writes that his parents and his nurse were his bridge to understanding and respecting other people’s beliefs and ways of life.

Think about the people in your life and how you would illustrate them or your relationship. If you have trouble, try thinking to yourself "My little brother is like a _____" or "My grandma treats me like a _____."

Now draw, describe, or make a collage of that image.

Present your metaphor to the class and answer any questions they may have.

• What is the purpose of metaphor? Why doesn’t Dr. Fisch just say, "At home I learned to respect others?"
