Look at the timeline on the Spread the Light website for answers to these questions:

• What new method of killing started in June of 1941? By June of 1942, how many people had been killed in this way?
• How many Jews from Odessa, Russia are shot in October of 1941?
• In July of 1942, how may gas chambers are running at Treblinka? How many people does each chamber hold?
• In September of 1942, how are bodies disposed of at Auschwitz?

Read your answers in class. Discuss the questions below.

• Some have said the Nazis lost the war because of their obsession with murdering Jews. What do they mean by that?
• The Nazis called their murders "exterminations," does that make it seem more or less horrible to you? Explain.
• The Nazis kept careful records of their murders. Do you think that meant they were proud of their actions? Why did they grow trees in places where camps had been?
