• Students will read Dr. Fisch’s story for ideas about how his father was feeling while in the camp.
• Students will use this information to write about Dr. Fisch’s father in a first-person narrative.

Read pages 28 and 30 of Light From the Yellow Star. Try to imagine what the days were like in the camp for Dr. Fisch’s father. What he saw. How he felt.

Now write a letter to your son (Dr. Fisch) explaining why you are giving away your food. Think about these questions:

• Do you know you will die if you feed others what little food you have?
• Do you want to die? Why or why not?
• What do you want to tell your son? What do you want him to know if you won’t be around? What are your hopes for his future?

Read your letter to the class and listen as they read theirs. Think about Dr. Fisch’s words: "The death of my father was the death of the world as I had known it before."
